Life
1939- ; b. Belfast; ed Grosvenor High School, QUB and Univ. of British Columbia; resided in Spain, 1965-66; moved to Canada; Professor and head of Creative Writing Dept. in Univ. British Columbia, teaches literary translation; Catalan Poems (Oberon 1972), shared Commonwealth Poetry Prize with Chinus Achebes Cry, Soul Brother (1972); a novel, Cage (Oberon 1987), won Ethel Wilson Poetry Prize; also trans. The Selected Poems of José Emilio Pacheco (New Directions 1987), won F. R. Scott Prize for Translation [League of Canadian Poets with Scott Foundation]; 11 boxes of McWhirters papers are held in the Library of British Columbia.
