Life
1795-1865 [prob. Margaret Bulkeley; adopted names James Barry, Miranda Stuart]; b. Cork; gained entrance to Edinburgh Medical School by pretending to be male; served in British colonial service; charged with conduct unbecoming while Chief Medical Officer of St. Helena.

She is the subject Colours: James Barry, Esq., a play by Jean Binnie (Dublin Th. Fest., 1988), and Whistling Psyche, another by Sebastian Barry [q.v.], in which she appears opposite Florence Nightingale (2004).
