1682-1764; Earl of Shannon, Speaker Irish House of Commons, 1733-1753. b. Castlemartyr, Co Cork; MP Middleton, and Kilmallock, 1707-1715; resisted vote for continuation of supplies to the govt. for 21 years, 1729; Privy Councillor, Chancellor of Exchequer, and Commissioner of Revue in Ireland; dismissed from Crown office in 1756 for opposing transfer of Irish funds surplus to England; retired as Speaker in 1753, with pension of £2,000 as token of popularity by Irish Commons, and the titles Baron of Castlemartyr, Viscount Boyle of Bandon, and Earl of Shannon; Irish House of Lords; acted freq. as Lord Chief Justice; d.
