Cork, Quaker; British Army in Egypt, Italy, and Ionian Islands; pleaded for Greek Independence at Council of Vienna; served Neapolitan Govt, 1816; expelled by revolutionaries when commander-in-chief of Sicily in 1820; knighted 1822; led Greek revolutionary campaign in Western Greece; settled in Greece; member of Council of State, inspector general of the Army; d. 30 March 1873, Athens.
