Robert Devereux [Earl of Essex]
      
Life 1567-1601; 2nd Earl of Essex; Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1599; punished his soldiers by decimation after the defeat at Arklow, 1599; proceeded against Earl of Tyrone, 1600; executed at the Tower, 25 Feb. 1601; purportedly 300 hundred men died when his powder train exploded at Dublin port.

Notes Lineage: His father Walter (1541-1576) was created the 1st Earl of Essex and was Earl Marshal of Ireland from 1573; he died at Dublin Castle.
