Criticism
Anna Cooke, review of Small Acts of Treachery, in Books Ireland (Nov. 2002), describes a plot involving Eileen Maloney and Mike Spencer caught up with the activities of the eugenic Crisis Call and its director Dieter Smithson. Cooke finds it a superb book with a fascinating story and great characters, and registers relief that the central character Eileen is not young and gorgeous - quoting: ‘She wasn’t beautiful or pretty, but she had a magnetism, an energy, which intrigued, which drew people, made them want to be close to her. She was fifty.’ (Books Ireland, Nov. 2002, p.280.)
