b. Belfast, raised in Co. Armagh; ed. Campbell College and TCD; taught English and History; m. Victoria Glendenning; became fulltime writer after 1992; two plays, Mumbo Jumbo and Donny Boy, both won awards; also issued Summerhouse (Galway Druid Theatre 1994).

Victoria Glendenning, wife of Robert and author of works on Lady Wilde, Jonathan Swift, et al., later became the partner of Terence de Vere White, literary ed. of The Irish Times, moving with him to London.
