Robert Hunter

Life
c.1720-?1803; b. N. Ireland; chief Irish painter of his period; said to have come from Ulster (acc. Pasquin); trained by Thomas Pope the Elder; painted Sir Charles Burton, Lord Mayor of Dublin, 1753; possibly trained at new RDS schools [see Robert West]; port. of Nicholas, Lord Taaffe, 1763, awarded RDS premium; exhibited in Dublin; intimate with Samuel Madden and Thomas Prior, acc. W. Carey (Memoirs of the Fine Arts, 1826); his works incl. two portraits of Madden and Admiral McBride, 1783 [whereabouts unknown]; also a portrait Francis Hutchinson (NGI); he is referred to in Thomas Campbell [Researches ... &c.] as ‘having done some capital portraits’.
