James Cahalan, The Irish Novel (1988) - writes: ‘Like Lever in Lord Kilgobbin, a couple of Big House novelists adapted this usually conservative form to stories of Fenian rebels, although with less success than Lever’ (Cahalan, op. cit., p.77); mentions Riddell in Maxwell Drewitt (1865) and T. Mason Jones in Old Trinity (1867).”
