The successive pages available on your screen from this index originated as a a draft-version of the article on Joyce printed in The New Dictionary of National Biography (2004) - which gathered the biographies of major figures omitted from earlier editions of that immense reference work, and where it appears with some emendations dictated by Oxford house-style. The article was later published separately by Oxford University Press as James Joyce (Oxford 2007) in a VIP series in the VIP series including lives of W. B. Yeats and others.
