Marquis of Londonderry
Life
fl.1923; Marquis of Londonderry, 1st min. of Education in N. Ireland, later Sec. of State for Air, GB., and Chancellor, QUB; outraged Protestants with his Education Act of 1923 in which he set out that religious education was to be excluded from the secular day of Northern Ireland schools and that teachers could not be compelled to teach it, with the implication that Catholic teachers could be employed in Class I schools; amended by James Craig in March 1925; 1930 Education act ensured Bible instruction in state schools.
