1818-1883; educated TCD, BA 1839; bar., 1840; QC, 1860; drafted Irish Church Act; legal adviser to Lord-Lieutenant, 1868; bencher of King’s Inns, 1870; Solicitor-general for Ireland, 1872; Irish privy councillor and Att.-General for Ireland, 1873; MP for Londonderry, 1874; Attorney-General under Gladstone, 1880; lord Chancellor of Ireland, 1881; LLD; he was a leading member of the Committee of Censorship, 1909, and interrogated G. B. Shaw, acting as a witness, on the question; his son was Hugh Alexander Law [q.v.]. ODNB
