Henry Montgomery Lawrence

Life
1806-1857; ed. Bristol and Londonderry, a br. of Sir George St Patrick Lawrence and John Laird Mair Lawrence, frist baron Lawrence; b. Matura, Ceylon; Addiscombe Coll., 1820; Bengal Artillery, 1822; various Indian postings; founded Lawrence Asylum for the Children of European Soldiers; gov-gen. for foreign relations of the Punjab; resident at Lahore, 1847; KCB, 1848; pres. for Punjab affairs board; 1849-50; chief commissioner and agent gen. Oudh, 1856; commander over all troops in Oudh, 1857; killed holding Lucknow; voluminous contributor to Indian press; he is a prominent character in J. G. Farrell’s [q.v.] novel The Siege of Krishnapur (1973).
