Life
1888-1959; b. Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim; ed. Methodist College, Belfast; joined IRB; journalist on North Down Herald, and editor of Freeman’s Journal; joined Dept. of Eternal Affairs in 1922; Irish rep. to Geneva, 1929; High Commissioner for League of Nations at Danzig (Gdansk), and protesting against Nazi persecution of Jews; Deputy secretary-general of the League, 1937-40; Secretary General, 1940-46, winding it up before retirement to the West of Ireland in 1947; awarded Woodrow Wilson Award, 1945; hon. doctorates from TCD and NUI.
