Longford, 1881; concerted scheme for vigorous administration of Protection of Person and Property Act, 1881; inspector of reforms to Khedive, Egypt, 1883, resigned 1884 when prison reform plans not supported; resident magistrate in Ireland, 1885; lieutenant governor of Mauritius, 1885-87; consul for Kurdistan, 1889; died at Erzeroum, 1891; wrote Ireland Under the Land League, A Narrative of Personal Experiences (1892).
