Life 1776-1835 Charles Mathews, comedian, went to Ireland 1794, played Dublin, Cork, and Limerick; left Ireland, 1795; played in Wales, York circuit, then London, at Haymarket, 1803, 1805-07; accompanied Drury Lane actors to Lyceum, 1809-11; instituted entertainments called At Homes; toured America, 1822-3; mgr. Adelphi with Yates; Paris 1839; America, 1834; four hundred roles; praised by Leigh Hunt, Horace Smith, and Byron; collection of theatrical pictures bought by Garrick Club. ODNB
