Protestant missionary colony; est. school, church, hospital, and printing press; ed. the Achill Missionary Herald and Western Witness attacking ‘superstition and idolatry of Church of Rome’; accused of souperism; his conversions attracted animosity of John McHale of Tuam; rector of Skreen, 1852-73; fluent in Irish; Introduction to the Irish Language (1854); colony defunct by 1879; strenuously opposed Land League.
