Life
1544-1602; 14th Baron Delvin, arriving in Ireland in 1559, he distinguished
himself against Shane ONeill; commanded the Pale in 1579; imprisoned
on suspicion of treason, 1580; ; returned to Ireland with permission,
and was leader of forces of Westmeath in 1593; arrested at outbreak of
Tyrones rebellion on suspicion of treason, died in Dublin Castle;
wrote A Primer of the Irish Language, and A Plot for the Reformation
of Ireland; there is a citation in OConnells Memoir on Ireland (1844; 2nd ed. 1845). [No refs in BML]. ODNB.
