John Stearne

Life
1624-1669 [var. 1628; also Sterne]; b. Ardbraccan, Co. Meath, in James Ussher, Bishop of Meath’s Episcopal palace, his father from Cambridge; ed. TCD, he fled to England in 1643, and returned in 1651, being appointed lecturer in Hebrew, after sojourn at Cambridge University; proposed the College of Physicians be founded at Trinity Hall in Back Lane, 1660; chartered, 1667; early medical Professor at TCD; works incl. Anima Medela (1653), Aphorismi de Felicitate (1664), De Destinatione (1672); Tractatus de Visitatione Informorum (Dublin 1697); bur. in chapel of TCD. RR ODNB DIB DIW

History of St. Patrick (Dublin 1810), by anon., claims that Jonathan Swift came to St. Patrick’s Deanship in succession to Dr. Stearne.
