W. G. Strickland

Life
(1850–1928); b. S. Africa, of English parents; ed. Ushaw College, Durham, and King’s College, Oxford; nephew of the agent of Viscount Dillon, leading him to spend much time in Ireland during childhood; met Margaret Ryan in Australia and m. in Ireland, with whom two sons and a dg.; appt. Registrar of National Galllery of Ireland, 1894-1914; served on Georgian Soc. publishing committee and contributed exensively to accounts of irish houses;

appt. Dir. of National Gallery on death of Hugh Lane in May 1915; lectured on the history of municipal government in Dublin and Dublin street names; elected President of the Royal Society of Irish Antiquarians [RSIA] in 1925; also did research on Dublin-printed books; issued Dictionary of Irish Artists [1915]; lived on Baggott St. and retired to Newtown House, Blackrock, Co. Dublin; d. at Newtown Hse., 26 Oct. 1928. DIB/RIA
