1780-1838; Unitarian minister; b. Ballynahinch, Co. Down; ed. TCD; ord. Dublin, 1806; founder-member of Irish Unitarian Society, 1830; DD, Univ. of Geneva, 1834; helped found Assoc. of Irish Non-Subscribing Presbyterians, 1835, and represented the Assoc. at the Reformation 300 celebrations in Geneva, 1835; Ordination Service, with appendix on Presbyterian biography based on his own research; d. Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, 4 Dec. DUB DIB.

Namesake: John Armstrong (1946-2012: John Armstrong, grew up in Dalkey, Co Dublin; ed. King's Hospital and TCD; contrib. to Trinity News ; joined Irish Times staff, Oct. 1969;a reporter, news editor and night editor; ed. Education pages; stories included exposure of the Merck toxin case in Co. Tipperary and the exposure of Bishop Casey’s secret fatherhood; m. Marion McDonald, with children Katie, David and Rachel; divorced; retired early, 2002, and continued writing journalism.
