Cambridge academic and author of We Are The People (1992), a memoir of a Shankhill Road childhood from which he emerged to study at the Royal Belfast Academical Institute [RBAI] as the only graduate of his primary school who succeeded in the 11-plus.

Namesake: A John Beatty was a Dubliner bookseller-publisher who joined with others in issuing Coombe wood: a novel, in a series of letters (Dublin: T. Henshall, for W. Sleater, J. Potts, T. Walker, J. Beatty, J. Exshaw, R. Burton, J. Parker, P. Byrne & T. Webb 1783), 262pp. The author also wrote Barford-Abbey, and The Cottage. Beatty also publishes with others the novel Evelina: or, A young lady’s entrance into the world (Dublin: Price, Corcoran, R. Cross, Fitzsimons, W. Whitestone, Chamberlaine, Williams, J. Hoey, W.
