Life
1822-1872; Viceroy and Gov. Gen of India, 1868; b. Dublin, ed. at home and TCD; toured Russia in 1845 and wrote an account; active in famine relief work, 1846-47; Chf. Sec., 1852; 1858, 1866; succ. to earldom, 1867; MP for Co. Kildare, Coleraine borough, and Cockermouth, from 1847 to 1868; favoured conciliation towards Catholics; cultivated friendly relations between India and neighbouring states [see Jan Morris, The British Empire, 3 vols]; reformed public finance; assassinated 8 Feb. 1872 inspecting penal settlement at Port Blair in Andaman Islands.
