Life b. Ireland; went to America as major in British Regt. based in Boston; turned Republican prior to Revolution; settled in S. Carlina; owned substantial
plantations there and in Georgia; delagate to Congress, 1787; mbr. of Convention that framed Constitution; author of fugitive slave clause; served as Senator, 1792-96, and 1802-04; opposed Jay treaty with Britain; director of 1st and 2nd Banks; dg. m. Owen Wister; there is a microfilm of his business interests and state concerns (Adam Matthew Publications).
