1611-1660 [16th Earl of Kildare]; rebuilt Maynooth Castle; befriended James Shirley, dramatist, in Ireland. Descended from Gerald, son of Maurice Fitzgerald, and known as Fitzmaurice, who opposed Roderick O’Connor in 1171, and received Kildare property from Strongbow, and built Maynooth.ODNB
