Commentary Stephen Watt, Joyce, OCasey, and Irish Popular Theater (Syracuse UP 1991): [His] play The Old Land, produced in Easter Week 1903, contained a rowdy pub-scene, and was censured by Irish critics for display[ing] a tendency to follow in the line of the conventional stage Irishman and Irishwoman, a creation never popular among Irish audiences, and now perhaps less so than ever (Freemans Journal; Watt, op. cit., p.77).
