?1697-1790; printer, paper-maker, and founder of the Belfast News Letter (1737), oldest paper in Ireland. Founded papermill at Randalstown, Co. Antrim; described by R. R. Madden as ‘a conveyancer and notary public who was given a printing works to pay off a debt’; retired ‘upon easy fortune’ in the 1750s. ODNB DIB
