Life
1832-1914; b. Cawnpore, dg. Sir Abraham Roberts (b. Waterford; 1784-1873), and a Tipperary mother; ed. Eton and Addiscombe; Bengal artillery, 1851; won VC during Indian Mutiny (‘The Hero of Lucknow’); marched from Kabul to Kandahar, 1800; commanded British forces in Boer War; relieved Kimberley; captured Cronje and his army, 1900; thanked by both houses; earl and KG, 1901; c-in-c, 1901-04; d. visiting front in 1914; secured commission for the 17 year old son of Rudyard Kipling in Irish Guards; Lord Roberts’s reputed last words, ‘I am proud to be an Irishman’.
