Life
1839-1900; son of William Stokes (1804-1878); ed. TCD; studied in Vienna, Paris, Berlin, and Prague; Prof. of Surgery at College of Surgeons, 1872; FRCS, 1874; knighted, 1886; surgeon-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria in Ireland, 1892; consulting surgeon to British forces in Natal (S. Africa), 1900; wrote a life of his father in the Masters of Medicine series (1898); d. Pietermaritzburg, of pleurisy.
